Nicole Richie: Maternity Designer!

Chic new-mama, Nicole Richie, told WWD at a Balenciaga fete in Los Angeles that she’d be creating her own signature maternity line. “I wore so much Balenciaga during my pregnancy … When my shirts got too short, I wore Joel’s with a jacket on top … My line will be about making women look and feel good at a really emotional time … It’s about showing your best self, not your tied, word-down self.”

Harlow Winter looks like her mom
Days after he and Nicole Richie welcomed daughter Harlow, Joel Madden can’t stop gushing over his newborn. “I am finally home with my beautiful girlfriend and our brand new little daughter,” he writes on his DCMA Collective Web site under the heading “It’s a Girl!!!!” “She is 19 inches long and growing everyday already! We are so blessed to have this beautiful little baby in our lives.” He adds that the baby “looks so much like her mom its crazy!” And how is Harlow? “She eats like a little maniac and she’s really sweet,” Madden says. “She barely ever cries, even when daddy is changing her diaper, and believe me I suck when it comes to diapers, but I’m learning! I can’t wait to show off some pictures.” He is asking friends and family not to send gifts or cards, but to “make a donation to the Richie-Madden Foundation, which we started in Harlow Winter’s honor.”

Nicole and Joel welcome daughter
Nicole Richie and her rocker boyfriend Joel Madden are the parents of a daughter. Harlow Winter Kate Madden was born Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and weighed 6 lbs. 7 oz. “The beautiful healthy baby girl left the hospital with her ecstatic parents,” says the rep, who confirmed the birth. Richie entered the hospital through a secret entrance late Thursday. Both Courtney Thorne-Smith and comedian David Alan Grier welcomed babies Friday. Richie’s parents and Madden’s brother Benji and his girlfriend Sophie Monk were at the hospital.

Nicole due this week
The countdown-to-baby has begun for Nicole Richie and Joel Madden. Their first child is due “sometime in the next week,” Madden’s older brother Josh told reporters at the FUZE/Resolution Slenderize bash in Hollywood Wednesday night. Just don’t expect the eldest Madden to dish any secrets on the impending arrival. “That’s all we know,” he said. “We don’t know what [gender] it is. We don’t know any names. I’m being completely honest, I swear!” Josh – whose next gig is DJ-ing at a Sundance Film Festival party with younger brother Benji – said he’s recently logged some quality time with both brothers and, of course, Richie. “Christmas was awesome,” said Josh, whose younger sister Sarah also recently gave birth. “Nicole couldn’t fly, but we were all there. My sister’s baby was born on he 20th, so it was right before.” And yes, the proud uncle has already picked out his baby present. “I got them some clothes, that’s what I’m into,” Josh said. “We’re very excited.”
Nicole and Joel find the meaning of Christmas
In their first major charitable outreach since announcing the launch earlier this month of the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden on Saturday hosted a holiday party for children and families from L.A. homeless programs. More than 200 children and their family members enjoyed a “winter wonderland” on the Paramount Studios lot featuring teddy bears, cookies, cupcakes, face-painting, clowns, holiday music, Santa Claus and his elves. Children, selected from the L.A. homeless program Beyond Shelter, were able to choose from a teddy bear mountain of 500 “Cuddle Cub” stuffed bears. “It was a no-brainer for us to pull this party together for them for the holidays,” Richie, who is pregnant with her first child, said. “We want to do much more to address the homeless issue, especially where it puts children at risk. But for now, we can at least try to help them have a merry Christmas by giving them teddy bears and getting them fitted for shoes. That’s something we can do right now, today.”
Nicole and Joel donate $200,000 in baby gifts
Not many kids have a foundation launched in their honor before they’re born. But that will be one of the many privileges bestowed upon Nicole Richie and Joel Madden’s baby, due in January. The couple hosted a surprise baby shower Monday for 100 expectant and new moms at the Los Angeles Free Clinic in Hollywood, where they handed out more than $200,000 worth of gifts. “The looks on their faces were priceless,” Richie told reporters after the shower. “Some of them didn’t even believe us [when they saw the gifts]. They thought we were joking.” The Richie Madden Children’s Foundation (at richiemaddenfoundation.com), Madden said, was an idea the couple had when they found out they were expecting. “We grew up in Los Angeles,” he said, “and we want our child to be a part of the community, and to know that there’s a responsibility to help the community.” And it’s a family affair. “We named it the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation because we each have families and our families are close, and our family is involved,” Richie said. By her side with his arm stroking her back during moments in the conference, Madden quipped, “We’re lucky that we have families that get along and love each other,” adding, “I think it’s great that our child will grow up as a part of that family.” Amongst the goodies given to families in need were Baby Bjorn products, cribs, mattresses and toys from Fisher-Price. “Everything they got, we got,” Richie says, “so everything that will be in their nursery, will be in our nursery.” Madden felt good about the event. “Sometimes people don’t want to believe that me and Nicole are just a young couple having a baby and we’re really excited. We don’t really get to share our lives with people. It’s nice to connect with people on a real level.”
Nicole opens up about pregnancy
With the birth of her first child just two months away, Nicole Richie says her pregnancy has helped her bond with her biological mother - and brought her closer to dad Lionel Richie. “When I found out that I was pregnant,” she tells Access Hollywood, “there was just something inside of me that felt a responsibility to mend any issues that I’ve had with my parents in the past, because, listen, I’ve put them through a lot.” Richie, 25, adds that she has spent time bonding with boyfriend Joel Madden’s mother, and her dad, too. “[The baby] is all he talks about, actually,” Richie jokes, adding that he doesn’t want the baby to call him”grandpa.” Though many of the gifts at Richie’s baby shower indicated that Richie and Madden are expecting a boy, she says she and Joel are waiting to find out the sex of the baby. “I like to know everything,” she says. “If he wasn’t at every doctor’s appointment, I probably would have found out by now just behind his back and not told him.” In her interview, which airs in two parts on Tuesday and Wednesday, Richie says she and Madden are holding off on planning their wedding. “I got to hold something for when I get older,” she says. “I can’t have everything happen in one year.”
